So far this was the sketch that was winning out in my poll for which one I should color, so I decided I would give it a try.

I think I am happy with it...the only thing that bothers me is her skin doesn't really look all that wet. It looks shiny and maybe damp, but not wet...but I wasn't really sure what to do, so I just left it at this point before I did something to ruin it.

Again, I am just hoping that this doesn't have to be marked mature since it was technically a scene from the movie where she first becomes human and rises out of the water. There is more detail in this version I suppose, but still there is nothing actually showing...so unless someone really thinks I should I am just gonna leave it at that.

That was supposed to be a sunset in the background, but by the time I got done with it, it sorta looked like a very abstracted version of a sunset, but anyway...I still liked it very much and could not really make myself change it because I loved the colors. :)

Anyway...let me know what you think. :D

EDIT January 8, 2011

I tried to go back and address a few of the issues that were brought up in the critique and I must say I am getting happier with this I believe. I did a bit more research and looked up references of people surfacing in pools and such and tried to study how the water droplets behaved and other things that would happen. I am sure it's not completely perfect since I have never attempted to draw water on anyone before, but I must say, I am quite proud for my first attempt! Please feel free to let me know what you think! :)

Also, I went back and tried to add a bit more to her back so that she doesn't look quite as thin, which was also an issue that was brought up. I also attempted to fix a few of the proportion issues so that hopefully everything is pulling together nicely now!

The last thing I did was add more water splashing up around her at the bottom, I hadn't included it before because it wasn't in the original reference pic I used of Ariel. But I figured it wouldn't hurt to be creative and since she was hitting the surface with that much force when she arrived there should probably be some water flying around more as evidence. I hope this piece is getting better, let me know if there are more issues that need to be worked on and improved and I will try my best! :D

Also, here is a link to the older version if anyone would like to compare it and see the improvements themselves: [link]

Ariel is from "The Little Mermaid" (c) Disney.

I thought I might be of help, when I saw you wanted a critique, so here it goes! First, I do not think this needs a mature label. Nothing private shows... her breasts are covered, and you can't see anything below her pelvic/hip bones, so on that count I think you are just fine!

I have to agree with another commenter, that Ariel's torso is a bit too skinny. I realize she was thin, but this is a bit beyond that... her proportions are a tad off, perhaps a little 'chub' around her mid-section, and a thinner neck? Have a friend or look for images of people arching their backs like this, and see what their necks do... and, maybe it is just me, but I think her forehead is a bit flat?

I love the fact that her hair is swooping with water, great motion in both!

I do enjoy the sunset background... I think it could be left on its own with no problem. I also like that she is placed off to one side, rather than in the middle that so many seem to do.

Your question on making her skin look wet... hop in the shower, get your body wet, and see how the droplets roll down your skin. I'd imagine that she'd have more droplets off her bikini top, some down her tummy, and definitely on her face and chin. Perhaps on her forehead rolling down and drops falling from her ear?

Overall I do like this image, and with a bit of tweaking, could be a wonderful piece for your gallery or an art portfolio!

I think once you make the adjustments, your overall vision will fall right into place for you!
